Petria Mitchell

Within the tradition of American Abstract Expressionism, Petria Mitchell's imaginary but tangible spaces materialize through adept applications of paint in varying tones and with changing levels of opaqueness. The luminosity of her colors engages the viewer's emotions.

Mitchell states that: "Using nature as an initial reference point allows me to play with limitless visual possiblities with a thorough appreciation for abstraction. Working with diffused light lets me emphasize my interest in the plasticity of paint."

Mitchell believes that painting is a process of becoming receptive to oneself, but it's also a difficult, heartbreaking form of expression that paradoxically, she loves!

Mitchell feels that "These paintings are compositions of internal places not visited. These words express her view that paint is a subject and color acts as an emotive force.

Petria Mitchell's formal training includes studies at the National Academy School of Design, New York; Vesper George School of Art, Boston, MA; and Jonathan Talbot Printmaking. Her work has been represented in numerous group and solo exhibitions including at the Wm. Baczek Fine Arts of Northampton, MA; the Southern Vermont Arts Center, Manchester; the Hood Museum of Brattleboro; and the 17th Annual Exhibition, National Academy of Design, New York; and the Alan Stone Gallery of New York.
